How To Save On Electric Bill & Conserve Energy
Replace Incandescent Light Bulbs With LEDs
It’s no secret anymore that LEDs are much more energy efficient, so consider replacing all of your current incandescent light bulbs with LEDs. Not only will they save more energy, they’ll last longer too, helping you save on your electric bill!
Unplug Electronics After Use
Even though you may not be charging your phone or laptop, the chargers could still be leeching energy at home, so I recommend taking an extra step and unplugging your electronics! Alternatively, you could use a smart power strip that shuts off the current when the electronics are not in use.
Unplug The Cable
This one is indirectly tied to your electric bill. Considering cutting the cable, I’m sure you might already even have subscription services such as Netflix or Hulu and don’t even need cable anymore. From doing this, you’ll not only save money from the cable company but you might also be watching less TV and save more on your electric bill!
Check For Leaks And Keep Home Sealed
Another way to save on energy and reduce your electricity bill is to check if there’s any leaks or gaps in your windows and doors and to seal them completely shut. Otherwise your energy will start going outside instead of staying in your home.
Use Cold Water For Laundry
An easy way to save on electric bill is to simply use cold water when doing laundry. Using hot water will consume more electricity because the water heater will need to turn on as well.
Turn Down Electric Water Heater
Speaking of water heater, turning down the temperature on your electric water heater will help to save more money on your electric bill as well!
Take Shorter Showers
This is simple enough as well, taking shorter showers will reduce how much water you use and limit the amount of time that your electric water heater needs to stay on for.
Look For A More Energy Efficient Showerhead
Did you know that you can potentially save 2,000+ gallons of water every year by using a more efficient showerhead? All that water saved also means more money saved on your electric bill!
If you want to save even more using this tip, look into purchasing a ShowerStart technology showerhead. This new smart showerhead won’t start the water until it’s sensed that it’s warm and then alert you.
So, you don’t end up standing in cold water or wait for it to get warm and end up wasting a few gallons. I call that a win-win!
Adjust Your Refrigerator Temperature
To keep your food fresh and save more money, you can keep your refrigerator at a temperature of 38 degrees C and your freezer at 5 degrees C.
Adjust Your Thermostat
Depending on your location and the season, a simple action such as adjusting your thermostat by just a few degrees can result in hundred of dollars in savings!
Clean Or Replace HVAC Filters
If your filters are constantly clogged, your AC will have to work harder to set the temperature your thermostat is set to. You can help out your AC and lower your electric bill by cleaning the HVAC filters and replacing them each month!
You’ll have to invest in filters but the amount you’ll save from them will outweigh their costs.
Use Dryer Balls
When you’re drying your laundry, take a small extra step and throw in some dryer balls. They’ll speed up the time required to dry your laundry faster so your dryer consumes less energy!
Use Solar Lights Outside
If you use or want lights outside. Considering using solar lights, they’re relatively cheap and not to mention don’t need energy because its energy gets charged in the daytime directly from the sun!
Install Motion Sensors
Motion sensors can greatly help you out in rooms you or someone often forgets to turn off the lights. An ideal place for instance would your kids’ bedrooms! You won’t have to worry about them forgetting to turn the lights off in their rooms anymore.
Clean Lint Out Of Your Dryer
To keep your dryer running efficiently, once a year clean out the lint from the ductwork and you’ll be able to save a little more on your electric bill!
Call Your Electricity Provider
Another simple yet less used way to lower your electric bill is to directly call your electricity provider and ask if you qualify for any discounts. You may be surprised that you may be able to score a discount!
Other Options That May Require Some Additional Capital:
Purchase Energy Star Appliances
Once you’re able to save up some money for your home and about to purchase a new washer, dryer, refrigerator and etc. opt for the appliances with the Energy Star label on them.
They are built to be energy efficient and smart so you’ll end up saving money on your electric bill in the long run.
Install Solar Panels On Your Roof
Having a company install solar panels on your roof to provide electricity will be a large investment up front. However, after a few years they will pay themselves off and you’ll be saving a lot more money afterwards!
Install Ceiling Fans In Rooms
Another way you’ll save in the long run but will need to put down some cash for is installing ceiling fans in all the rooms in your home.
They will definitely consume less energy than your air conditioner while also keeping you cool on those hot summer days.
Install A Smart Thermostat
With the advancement of technology you can do less and save more! By installing a smart programmable thermostat, you’ll be able to set the thermostat remotely if you forget to do it at home, using an app.
If you get a Nest thermostat, it’ll even remember your temperature patterns so you won’t have to even adjust it when you’re home from work or anything, Nest will do it all for you! How awesome is that!
