Let’s face it, most of love and spend a LOT of money on food! But sometimes we just can’t help it, we go to the grocery store and see chocolate and just wanna indulge in it.
Well, I understand that struggle too well, so I decided to share some of my tips with you on how to save money on groceries. I follow these tips to avoid situations like that and to make sure I’m not over spending on my grocery shopping.
How To Save Money On Groceries:
Plan Ahead For Grocery Shopping
1. Go When You’re Not Hungry
If you go grocery shopping when you’re hungry, you’re going to be easily tempted to buy unnecessary foods because it’ll be all around you. So do yourself a favor and pick a time when you know you won’t be hungry, such as after breakfast or lunch.
2. Track Your Expenses
If you’re serious about saving a few hundred dollars on your groceries every month or want to cut your bills in half, then tracking your expenses is one of the most important ways for you to save money on groceries.
If you track your expenses, you’ll have an idea on what to set for your monthly budget for groceries. From there you’ll be better prepared for the next few steps.
3. Make a Meal Plan
Before you go grocery shopping, it’s also a good idea to create a meal plan for the week so you know exactly what you’ll be eating. This will greatly help you save on foods because you know all the ingredients that you need for a particular dish.
There are plenty of meal plans to try that are cheap and healthy!
4. Make a Cheap Grocery List
If you do the above step, then making a cheap grocery list will also be easier because you’ll have already researched what you need for your meals.
But if you didn’t then think of the staple foods that you need to eat and that are cheap such as beans, pasta, peanut butter, bread and etc. and try to come up with some meals that way.
Download Grocery Apps
5. Earn Cash Back From Your Receipt
One of the best and easiest ways to save money on groceries is to earn some of that money back through cashback programs like ibotta.
If you download and sign up for ibotta, you can add cashback deals to your account and then once you’re done shopping you simply scan your receipt on the app and once it’s processed you’ll get cashback on your grocery shopping!
6. Download The Grocery Store App If Available
For example if you know you’re going to do your grocery shopping at Walmart or Lucky’s then download their app!
Some grocery stores will have their own separate deals on the app. And you’ll also be able to see if there are any coupons available and what the deals are going on that week!
7. Download Ebates and Earn Gift Cards by Shopping Online
Another easy way to save money on groceries is to earn gift cards by doing your shopping online. With Ebates, you can get cashback in the forms of giftcards or cash just by shopping online.
They have over 2,000 stores you can choose from to do your shopping from such as Amazon, Walmart, Target and more!
In fact, if you sign up and spend at least $25 within 90 days of signing up, you’ll even get a free $10 gift card or cash bonus! So next time you need to do shopping online, just head over to Ebates and see if you get your shopping done there!
8. Check What Stores Price Match
Before paying the full price on your groceries, see if the grocery store price matches other places. If you find cheaper deals elsewhere but do your grocery shopping at a different store then you can take advantage of price matching.
You can either do this online, call them and ask or see if they have any information about price matching on their app if it’s available.
Tip: If you do any kind of online shopping, a great tool to use is Paribus, it will help you get refunds on your purchases!
9. Look at Store Ads for Coupons
If there isn’t an app for the grocery store you’ll be shopping at then go the old fashioned way and look at their weekly ads to see if they’re offering any coupons or deals that you could use.
10. Buy in Bulk
If you have a big family or you just know that you’ll be eating a lot of a certain food, then buy it in bulk! It’ll save you some money and you’ll have more food!
And if those food that you buy aren’t produce or anything that’ll go bad quickly then you can just have it in your pantry for when you need them.
If you don’t have a Costco or Sam’s Club membership, you can even do some bulk grocery shopping on Amazon! On Amazon’s website, they have a section for the top bulk products.
11. Buy Generic Store Brand Foods
Another great tip to save money on groceries is to buy the generic brand foods rather than the other brands. The generic brands are practically the same thing and cheaper so you save on foods.
12. Know What to Buy Organic and What to Buy Conventional
There’s a lot of confusion as to what’s worth buying organic and what’s fine just buying conventional. So to save money on groceries every month I suggest doing some research on what produce you should buy organic and what you can skip out on and still be fine buying the conventional type.
13. Don’t Grocery Shop More Than Once A Week
An incredibly easy way to save more money on groceries is to simply go grocery shopping less. If you can make a good and cheap grocery list and meal plan than you easily get away with only going grocery shopping once a week!
14. Hold Back on Your Temptations
When you go to the checkout line, you’ll have a TON of temptations to buy those little candies and drinks at the front. DON’T GIVE IN!
They used to get me all the time and I just couldn’t resist but once I started to fight my urge for sweets it’s gotten much easier. This alone will easily save you a good amount of money on your groceries every month, if it’s a problem that you have, like I did.
15. Actually Cook The Food You Bought
This may seem like a no-brainer but there have been lots of times where I’ve had a grocery list, a meal plan ready and I just didn’t cook the food that I bought. I got lazy and didn’t follow through with the meal plan.
So just try to understand that you’ve spent your hard earned money on this food and you should definitely try your best to consume it before it expires.
16. Save The Food You Bought As Leftovers
Again, this might seem obvious but just to keep you on track to save money on groceries, try not to waste too much of the food that you cooked or bought.
If it’s possible, keep that food as leftovers for the next day. You’ll have another meal to enjoy and you’ll save more money on foods!
17. Extend Shelf Life
If you bought certain fruits and they’re going bad, then put them in the fridge or even better, for fruits like bananas, freeze them and use them for smoothies later! This is a great way to extend the foods’ shelf life and save money on groceries.
18. Keep Foods Visible On Countertop and Fridge
Another tip to save money on groceries is to make sure your food is visible either in your fridge or the countertop.
It’s easy to forget that we have food available when it’s hidden or stuffed behind all the other stuff that’s around. If you see the food is there you’ll be less likely to eat out as well.
Well that concludes the list on how to spend less on groceries and save more money each month! These are some great tips to save and earn cashback on your shopping, but another great way to have more money in your pocket is to simply make more money!
An easy and relatively fast way to make extra money is by doing surveys for popular websites. My top three favorite survey sites at the moment are Swagbucks, Survey Junkie and Pinecone Research. Once you sign up for them you’ll be able to start taking short surveys and make money!
