Saving money kinda sucks because you can’t get the things you wanna get. But you gotta do it. To make it a little easier on you, here are some things you can do to save more money each month without feeling like you’re sacrificing your next vacation or being able to put a down payment for a new house.
Some things on this list are pretty easy to do, but some of them could take some getting used to. You just have to be disciplined to a certain degree and know that you’ll be better off.
It might start out to be a little difficult but once you’ve started these tips it’ll become easier as time goes on. So, here’s the list, start saving!
12 Tips To Save More Money Each Month
1. Ditch Cable
Now, with the advent of Netflix and Hulu, you really don’t need cable. It’s much easier to get more than enough entertainment from those two services alone, or even just one and save more money.
Netflix even creates their own Netflix Original movies and television shows that are actually very good. Yes, I’m talking about Stranger Things. So it might be better to just ditch cable and save around $100 every month!
2. Swap Bottled Water For A Water Filter
Bottled water can cost money every month and it’s plastic so all that waste will be bad for the environment. So you can do yourself and the world a favor and get a good water filter. This is a great investment because if you calculate how much you spend on water bottles every year, it can cost much more and be more harmful to your health than a nice, high quality water filter.
You’ll only have to buy this once and maybe change the filter(s) every 3 months or so, depending on which type you get. Some filters you won’t need to change for years! Plus, some bottled water are just filled with tap water! So by using a water filter in your home, you’ll save more money and take better care of your body.

If you don’t want to get any of these, you also have an option of getting one of those pitchers with water filters included in them. The one that I’ve used in the past was a Brita Water Pitcher with Filter. It’s not the best quality water filter, but nonetheless, it’s still much much better than tap water, depending on where you live.
3. Change Cell Phone Plans
You should take a look at your monthly cell phone bill and see if you’re paying too much for a service that you can get elsewhere for half the price. There are multiple cell phone plans now that are just as reliable as the more expensive ones, so consider switching to save more money.
Also try to ask what discounts they provide as well, you may qualify for one! Most people don’t bother asking and end up missing the opportunity to easily save more money on their cell phone bills.
4. Lower Your Electricity Bill
This can be done easily as your become more energy conscious. For example, turn off the lights when you leave a room, try not to shower for 30 minutes and see if you can swap out your light bulbs for LEDs.
The LEDs will require some upfront costs, but they’re fairly inexpensive if you think long term and per bulb price. Over the period of years you’ll be using them, you’ll save a lot more on your electricity bill too because they’re much more energy efficient.
Another trick to lower your monthly electricity bill is to unplug electronics that you aren’t using.
Cell phone chargers, video game systems and other electronics that you keep plugged in while you’re at work use up energy even if they’re not being used. And if you have multiple electronics around your home, the electricity adds up and can make your bill a little higher.
5. Save On Groceries
When you go grocery shopping, try bringing a list every time you go. This way you won’t be as inclined to buy things you don’t need and you’ll save more time because you’ll just find what you need from your grocery list and then check out. You can also try to buy generic brands as they’re more or less the same thing that the big brands are selling you for a higher price.
And if you want to take it to the next level, start getting cashback from your grocery purchases with the ibotta app! This app lets you add cashback deals on your phone which you can redeem simply by scanning your receipt from the grocery store. This can be a simple way to save even more when you buy groceries!
6. Use Coupons, Discounts & Cashback Sites When Shopping Online
In addition, to using ibotta, you can also start using Ebates to save you money when you shop for other things online. With Ebates, you can sign up and use cashback deals from many big brands when you shop online. And the cashback deals can be around 8% or more for certain companies. Swagbucks is another popular site where you can receive cashback on your shopping!
For discounts, I usually go to retailmenot and search for the online store that I might be shopping for and see if there’s any coupon codes I can apply to my purchase. You’ll be surprised how many good coupon codes you can find for your favorite stores!
7. Bring Lunch To Work
If you’re spending around $10 for lunch every workday, that totals to about $200 for a month and that’s not counting additional snacks you might purchase from vending machines. If you decided to bring lunch to work everyday you could be saving at least half of that. Plus you’ll probably be eating healthier meals too if you cook at home.
Also, to make this process easier, you can meal prep! You can cook all of you meals that you’ll be eating for the week at once and store them in glass containers in the fridge. Then you just take one of those containers every morning before you go to work!
This can save you a LOT of time and you’ll save more money because you’ll most likely finish all the food since it’s cooked. And, you’ll take your food to work everyday before it has a chance to spoil so you won’t have to end up throwing it away!
8. Look Over Your Gym Membership
Do you really need to be spending $100 or so a month for your gym membership. See if the company that you work for has a gym around the office where you can workout for free!
If that’s not an option and you live in an apartment or condo, check out the community and see if there’s a gym there. Most apartment complexes should have some type of a gym that you can use for free.
If neither of those are options for you, then consider investing in your own weights that you can use to workout at home and to save more money. They will pay for themselves in a few months, that you would’ve paid for anyways for your gym membership.
9. Stop Smoking
This may not be as easy if you’re a smoker, but cigarettes can add up to a good amount of money. If you’re struggling with your finances you need to stop wasting money on things that don’t benefit you in any way. So try to quit smoking and you can save more money every month and you’ll be MUCH healthier!
10. Make Your Own Coffee
If you’re buying coffee every morning before or at work those $5 everyday can add up to a decent amount of money every month. Instead, to save more money, brew your own coffee.
You can purchase a coffee machine for super cheap these days and ground coffee is also inexpensive. You can have multiple cups of Joe everyday and you’ll still be saving more money than purchasing coffee elsewhere.
11. Don’t Impulse Buy
You’ll be losing a BIG chunk of money if you buy things impulsively. Meaning you haven’t really thought about if you actually need something and you just want to buy it because you’re looking at it at the moment. Don’t fall into those marketing traps! You don’t need a hover board if you’re trying to improve your financial situation!
Use the 10 second rule to help you with this. Whenever you’re at the mall or store and you see something you really like, just stop and think hard for 10 seconds to see the pros and cons of what you’re looking at to see if it’s worth purchasing or you really even need it.
12. Use Cashback Cards
Another way to save more money when doing any type of shopping is to use credit cards that give you cashback! For example, I use a cash rewards credit card that gives me 3% back on gas, 2% back on groceries, and 1% on everything else!
You might not think that’s a lot but I’ve had some months where I’ve gotten back about $50 just from my cashback. If you use a cashback credit card in addition to ibotta, Ebates, or Swagbucks then you’re talking about saving a GOOD amount of money that you’ll get back easily.
Another way to have more money in your pocket is to simply earn more. Whenever you find yourself sitting on the couch watching television, or just when you have free time, grab your phone or laptop and start making some easy money with these sites/apps.
